Liner Notes
By now, everybody is playing
the Little Willies, Norah Jones' fun side project with her Manhattan musician buds! Harkening back to her pre-star, bar band days, the vibe here is big time talent playing it loose, returning to their roots, covering mostly classic songs by greats like Hank, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, and, of course... Willie Nelson, who seems to be omni-present these days! The remaining tunes are penned by her band, in particular, the sensitive but witty Richard Julian, who holds his own alongside world class songwriters. "Roll On," the advance single written by her guitarist Lee Alexander - who produced
the Little Willies and co-produced some of the songs on Julian's
Slow New York with Jones - is vintage Jones and a beautiful nugget that would sound at home on any Jones album. A lark of a closing track, "Lou Reed" features a tipsy Jones and Julian on a hilarious tribute to the city's godfather of punk. ("I swear I saw Lou cow-tippin'...")
Jones co-produced four tracks and sings backup on three of 'em on Richard Julian's major label debut,
Slow New York. Julian has toured twice with Jones, singing duets on her last tour. He co-wrote two songs on her last album,
Feels Like Home. As Jones takes a break from her nearly overbearing success, Julian's career is launching. You might recall his debut album on the ill-fated Blackberry/Sire label about a decade and several records back. His 2002 release,
Good Life was critically acclaimed with folks like Bonnie Raitt and Randy Newman taking notice. Art Garfunkel recorded Julian's "Young and Free". The Delaware native has nicely refined his own unique and twisted art of observation by now on
Slow New York. Try the disc's signature opener "Love of Mine," the rocking "If a Heart Breaks," "Cheap Guitar" (with Jesse Harris on harp), "End of the Line" or, even, the froggy "Damn" ("We got an old guy here, he's having too much fun...").
The Little Willies and Julian's
Slow New York were born from sessions at the Living Room in New York.

Press
"Julian stands out on his own thanks to his appealing, unassuming acoustic pop colored with shades of folk, country, blues and jazz."
—
People
"From the zydeco shuffler 'If a Heart Breaks' to the brilliant 'Love of Mine,' he offers up flashes of intellect, humor and adept storytelling. But what really makes this 14-track set exceptional is his backing band of top-notch New York musicians, including Norah Jones, who sits in on piano and co-produces four tracks, one of which is the jumpin' jazz standout "A Short Biography."
—
Los Angeles Daily News
"This New Yorker tosses off self addressed put-downs with the ease of the young Springsteen during his acoustic Jersey-boy period. But Julian does rueful well, too, his craggy voice finding solace in his minor-key melodies."
—
Entertainment Weekly
"...So the title
Slow New York might be as much a sly nod to this career pace trajectory as it an ode to the leisurely side of America's fastest city."
